(April 14, 2016 06:22) — NEW YORK, April 14 (UPI) — Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders opened their ninth debate with sharp attacks on each other five days ahead of the crucial New York primary.

Sanders fired first when asked about his recent criticism that Clinton was not “qualified” to be president.

“I’ve known Secretary Clinton, how long, 25 years? I said that in response to the kind of attacks we were getting form the Clinton campaign,” Sanders said. “Does Secretary Clinton have the experience and intelligence to be president? Of course she does. But I do question her judgment. Her judgment that voted for the war in Iraq, the worst foreign policy blunder in our nation’s history.”

(Apr. 4, 2016 12:54) — he continued operation of the “decaying” 40-year-old Indian Point nuclear power plant up the Hudson River from New York City “makes no sense,” said Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders two weeks before the New York State presidential primary.

The two, 1970s-era Indian Point nuclear reactors, situated about 25 miles (40 km) north of New York City and within 50 miles of 20 million residents, have come under increased scrutiny of late as the facility has experienced nine occurrences of technical problems in the past year or so. Four of them were serious enough to shut down the plant, RT’s Alexey Yaroshevsky reported in February.

Love Trumps Hate – Actress Rosario Dawson on Why She Supports Bernie Sanders for President
By Amy Goodman, DemocracyNow.org

(Apr. 4, 2016 08:00) — On Thursday night, between 16,000 and 20,000 people gathered in St. Mary’s Park in the South Bronx for a Bernie Sanders rally, where Sanders stressed his Brooklyn roots. It was the first time in decades a presidential candidate spoke in the South Bronx. He spoke alongside director Spike Lee and actress Rosario Dawson, who is known for her role in Kids and many other films, including Sin City: A Dame to Kill For as well as Rent.

After the rally DemocracyNow’s Amy Goodman caught up with Dawson while she was on the sidewalk with friends and asked her why she was supporting Bernie Sanders.

I’m supporting Bernie Sanders because we do need a single-payer healthcare system that takes care of everyone. And that is not a pipe dream; that’s something that’s happening all over the world and in really positive ways,” Dawnson said. “We are a social democracy. That’s our firefighters, that’s our policemen. And it shouldn’t be drawing a line, that’s—you know, a fireman will go into your house to take your hard drive out and save your cat, but if you break your leg, screw you.”

“That doesn’t make any sense, you know? And when you actually go and you travel around the world and you start recognizing that people can actually be sick, they can take—you know, have a broken leg and not lose their job and lose their livelihoods and lose their homes over it, that’s really important.”

Bernie Sanders’ Political Revolution Surging in Wisconsin

(Apr. 2, 2016 08:44 pm) — Even though political pundits and mainstream media talking heads buried Bernie Sanders campaign long ago, never really giving him any chance at all, the Vermont Senator is surging in Wisconsin after winning 6 out of the last 7 Democratic primary contests. Most of the recent Wisconsin polling has Sanders ahead of Hillary Clinton by a few points. This is a rather remarkable turnaround in Wisconsin as Sanders trailed the Democratic front-runner by over 40% a year ago.

On one hand, Bernie Sanders’ surge in Wisconsin makes perfect sense as Wisconsin is the birthplace of the progressive political movement, with a history of accommodating anti-establishment candidates. The political upset felt across the nation in Michigan is a good omen for the Sanders’ campaign in neighboring Wisconsin as both states utilize open primaries that allow independents to vote in the Democratic primary and independents overwhelmingly favor Sanders.

How Bernie Learned to Love the Polls

(Apr. 2, 2016 06:00 a.m. EDT) — Bernie Sanders’ campaign used to dismiss poll numbers. The insurgent candidate has long trailed Hillary Clinton in national surveys, and his numbers have tended to only rise state by state as the campaign turns to each new contest.

But now that he’s gained more national attention, Sanders has started to sound downright Trumpian and in love of touting the latest stats on his campaign. While stumping at a high school gym in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Friday afternoon, Sanders kicked off his normal speech by adding a bit of bragging about a host of favorable numbers.

By Russell Berman, The Atlantic

(Apr. 1, 2016) — BRONX, New York—Mercer Jabul sat quietly at the very top of a hill at St. Mary’s Park, huddled underneath a hooded white coat as she waited, with an estimated 18,500 others, for Bernie Sanders to arrive in the South Bronx. A black woman in her 60s, Jabul is devoted to Sanders and said she has plans to vote for him in New York’s April 19 primary. But she wasn’t positive she was going to vote at all. It had been quite a while.

“I haven’t voted since Mayor Lindsay!” she told me. That would be John Lindsay, the long-ago New York mayor who made unsuccessful bids for president and Senate. He left City Hall in 1973, and the last time he appeared on a ballot was 1980. He died in 2000.

So far, the Sanders campaign says it has raised $109 million in the first quarter of 2016 — over 97 percent of that was raised online.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign hasn’t released her numbers for March yet. In February, she brought in $30 million.

(Apr. 1, 2016 11:14 a.m.) — Bernie Sanders spent Thursday in New York campaigning in the Bronx for the state’s April 19 primary. Between rallies, the Democratic presidential candidate found time to pay a visit to the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan and say hi to comedian Stephen Colbert.

During Colbert’s “Wheel of News” segment — a “Wheel of Fortune”-inspired bit in which Colbert spins a wheel of random discussion topics and games — in Thursday’s episode of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the comedian spun the aforementioned wheel and landed on “mystery guest.” That guest turned out to be none other than Sanders.
