(Apr. 4, 2016 08:00) — On Thursday night, between 16,000 and 20,000 people gathered in St. Mary’s Park in the South Bronx for a Bernie Sanders rally, where Sanders stressed his Brooklyn roots. It was the first time in decades a presidential candidate spoke in the South Bronx. He spoke alongside director Spike Lee and actress Rosario Dawson, who is known for her role in Kids and many other films, including Sin City: A Dame to Kill For as well as Rent.

After the rally DemocracyNow’s Amy Goodman caught up with Dawson while she was on the sidewalk with friends and asked her why she was supporting Bernie Sanders.

I’m supporting Bernie Sanders because we do need a single-payer healthcare system that takes care of everyone. And that is not a pipe dream; that’s something that’s happening all over the world and in really positive ways,” Dawnson said. “We are a social democracy. That’s our firefighters, that’s our policemen. And it shouldn’t be drawing a line, that’s—you know, a fireman will go into your house to take your hard drive out and save your cat, but if you break your leg, screw you.”

“That doesn’t make any sense, you know? And when you actually go and you travel around the world and you start recognizing that people can actually be sick, they can take—you know, have a broken leg and not lose their job and lose their livelihoods and lose their homes over it, that’s really important.”

(Mar 20, 2016) — VANCOUVER, Washington—If it’s too late for Bernie Sanders to catch his rival Hillary Clinton and win enough delegates to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, someone forgot to tell Bryan Anaya.

Anaya, a 27-year-old construction worker from Vancouver, awoke at 5:30 a.m. Sunday because he’d heard on a radio talk show that Sanders had planned a rally in his city, in advance of Washington’s democratic caucus on Saturday. He and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Nichole Vega, dressed her two children, 6-year-old Julissa and 2-year-old Julian, and headed to Hudson’s Bay High School to wait in line in a blustery Pacific Northwest downpour, to hear Sanders speak. They waited for hours. “The kids are soaked,” Vega said.

(Mar. 9, 2016 18:04 ET) — Bernie Sanders was the story of Tuesday night as he beat Hillary Clinton in Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary. It wasn’t a walloping — he won by less than 2 points — but still a big coup considering Clinton led in most polls by double digits before the race.

Michigan is Sanders’ ninth state win, though Clinton still leads in delegates overall.

by Howard Gleckman, CONTRIBUTOR

(MAR. 8, 2016 15:31) — Let’s say you’re a Democrat who wants to raise taxes on rich people. It turns out there are two very different ways to do it: The direct, simple, in-your-face Bernie Sanders version and the indirect, complicated, back-door Hillary Clinton model.

I’m not talking about the magnitude of their respective tax proposals. That’s a whole different story. This is really about the best way to structure tax increases, assuming you want to enact them at all. And by that measure, Sanders has the far better model.

by Conor Friedersdorf

The ATLANTIC (Jul. 31, 2015) — The Wall Street Journal’s eyebrow-raising story of how the presidential candidate and her husband accepted cash from UBS without any regard for the appearance of impropriety that it created.

The Swiss bank UBS is one of the biggest, most powerful financial institutions in the world. As secretary of state, Hillary Clinton intervened to help it out with the IRS. And after that, the Swiss bank paid Bill Clinton $1.5 million for speaking gigs. The Wall Street Journal reported all that and more Thursday in an article that highlights huge conflicts of interest that the Clintons have created in the recent past.
