Bernie Sanders: Big Pharma a health hazard

(Aug. 15, 2016 1:38 p.m.) — The pharmaceutical industry has become a major health hazard to the American people.

Our nation pays — by far — the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. As a result, nearly one in five Americans cannot afford to fill their prescriptions. That is unacceptable. A lifesaving product does no good if patients cannot afford it.

A new report from Americans for Tax Fairness explains how a pharmaceutical company, Gilead Sciences, games the system to charge high prices and then shifts the profits offshore to avoid billions in U.S. taxes.

(Mar. 19, 2016 12:40 EST) — Tribune Publishing Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times, was temporarily blocked by a judge from acquiring newspaper publisher Freedom Communications Inc. after the U.S said the combination would create a monopoly in southern California.

U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte Jr. in Los Angeles issued a temporary restraining order Friday after the U.S. government sued to prevent the deal. The Justice Department said this week that Tribune would dominate newspaper sales in two counties, allowing it to increase subscription costs and raise advertising rates.
